FAQ

Your guide to a successful career in the Merchant Navy

The General Purpose (G.P.) Rating course is a 6-month pre-sea training program that prepares candidates for entry-level jobs in the Deck and Engine departments of a ship. It equips students with skills in seamanship, firefighting, safety procedures, and engine room operations.

Candidates must have completed 10th or 12th standard with at least 40% marks in English, Science, and Mathematics. The age limit is 17.5 to 25 years, and the candidate must be physically fit as per maritime medical standards.

After completing the course, candidates can work as deck ratings or engine ratings on cargo ships, oil tankers, passenger ships, and container vessels. With experience and further training, they can be promoted to higher ranks like Bosun, Able Seaman, or Fitter/Oiler.

The starting salary for G.P. Rating candidates varies between ₹40,000 to ₹50,000 per month, depending on the type of vessel and company. With experience, the salary can increase significantly, especially for those who get promoted to senior positions.

Most institutes conduct their own entrance tests, which include basic English, Mathematics, and Aptitude. Some companies also offer sponsorship programs, where candidates must clear an exam and interview before joining training.

Yes, G.P. Rating candidates can upgrade to officer ranks by gaining sea experience and completing further training. For example, Deck Ratings can become Deck Officers by clearing competency exams, while Engine Ratings can become Marine Engineers with additional studies and certifications.
